The first edition Translation(s) I was released in 2013 and was screened at international art festivals in Hong Kong, Slovenia, Denmark, Italy, and Canada. During 2014 a second edition of the project was realized and ‘Translation(s) II; Translating the City 2015’ was screened in 2015 in Hong Kong and Slovenia. In March 2016 Poposki and Wood screened their videos from the project at the Videotage Booth at Art Basel Hong Kong 2016. The third edition ‘Translation(s) III; Bodies In Transit’ will be available from mid-July 2017

In May 2017 the Translation(s) I & II compilations were added to Videotage’s media art collection “VMAC” (, which is a public video arts online database / archive for research and educational purposes.


Translation(s) I was first screened on the giant video billboard at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park in conjunction with an exhibition of a series of paintings and collages by Laurence Wood, and the production of a limited edition collaborative print work by Zoran Poposki and Laurence Wood.

The video compilation was then presented as a preview for the 12th edition of the public art festival ‘ART STAYS’ that took place in Ptuj (Slovenia) from July 23rd to September 1st, in 2013.

The artists featured in that compilation were Arnold J Kemp (USA), Tricia Sellmer (Canada), Lucy Harrison (UK), Daniel Arnaldo Roman (Puerto Rico), Zoran Poposki (HK/Macedonia), Laurence Wood (HK/UK), Luis Lara Malvacias (USA/Venezuala), Daman Ayers & Tessie Ward (USA), Victoria Hindley (USA), and Eva Petric (Austria/Slovenia).

‘Translation(s) II; Translating the City 2015″ was the second edition of the project screened in 2015 in Hong Kong and Slovenia. The video compilation was premiered at the Videotage gallery in Hong Kong in June, and subsequently screened on the large outdoor public screen at the 13th ART STAYS festival in Slovenia in July 2015.

This second edition ‘Translating the City’ explored urban space and place through the medium of video, employing a variety of strategies and interdisciplinary approaches, from mapping and public space performance, to the exploration of spatialized identities, cultural memory, and cultural translation. The participating artists reconsidered the city as a space of negotiation and interchange between agents from different cultures, the scene of an ongoing process of translation.

“Justin Ascott explored the semiotic ‘afterlife’ of a metropolitan structure in terms of the possibilities of urban recoding, while Michael Poetschko and Luis Lara Malvacias engaged with the city as a screen for desires and utopias. Wanderlusts takes flight in Damon Ayers & Tessie Word’s mining of their personal digital archives and Arch Dyson’s ludic commentary on the experience of global travel, while Jean Marie Casbarian’s work is a poetic meditation on migration and loss. Isolation embedded in the act of “looking at the city” from the perspective of the other marks Jessica Ledwich’s nocturnal urban landscape and Zoran Poposki’s appropriation of a piece of postmodern auteur cinema; whereas Eva Petrič and Laurence Wood take contemporary urban unrest as a metaphor for a much deeper symbolic struggle”
